WHAT DOES SUSTAINABILITY MEAN TO YOU?
This question is exactly what we, the organizers at Smith College, asked ourselves when we first sat down to start planning Earth Week 2K15. What is our intention? What does sustainability really mean? And what are we missing when we talk about "the earth?" The answer was easy: the people. Justice. Equality. Equity. Access. The theme of this year's Earth Week, The Planet and the People On It: Rethinking Popular Narratives of Our Right to the Earth strives to include the experiences of human beings in our conversation about environmentalism, sustainability and climate change. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What is Environmental Justice? Environmental Justice is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies. |

EPA has this goal for all communities and persons across this nation. It will be achieved when everyone enjoys the same degree of protection from environmental and health hazards and equal access to the decision-making process to have a healthy environment in which to live, learn, and work.
Is this the ethical code we align with when we call ourselves environmentalists? It not, then why? Smith College Earth Week 2K15 asks this question of participants: we are fighting for environmental justice, are you?
